⚠️ This is an extremely hazardous situation:
High-Tension Springs: The cables are the only thing connecting the door’s weight to the high-tension springs. To fix the cable, the springs must be safely de-tensioned. Only a trained professional with the right tools can do this.
Imminent Risk of Collapse: The door is hanging by a thread (the other cable). Any attempt to move it or “fix” the cable can cause the other cable to snap or the remaining rollers to pop out, bringing the entire 300lb+ door crashing down.
Complex Re-calibration: This isn’t just “putting the cable back on.” A technician must safely secure the door, unwind the springs, reset both cables on their drums, level the door, and then re-tension the spring system perfectly. It’s a complex and precise balancing act.

Visually inspect the cables. Look for any signs of fraying, rust, or kinking.
Watch the door close. Does it close evenly, or does one side touch down before the other? An unbalanced door puts uneven stress on the cables.
Listen for scraping or grinding. Obstructions in the track can cause the door to "hiccup" or jam, which can be enough to throw a cable off the drum.

The cable needs constant tension to stay in its grooves. Anything that creates sudden slack — the door hitting something on the way down, a spring losing torque, a sticky roller — lets the cable walk off the drum. Loose drum set-screws and worn grooves do it too. Re-seating the cable without fixing that root cause just schedules a repeat visit, so we always diagnose the trigger.
We'd advise against it. To re-seat a cable you have to release and re-apply spring tension with winding bars, and getting the drum timing wrong on one side leaves the door permanently crooked. It looks like a five-minute fix; it's actually a counterbalance job.
