Lubrication: If a lock is just “sticky,” you can try a graphite-based lock lubricant. Do not use WD-40, as it attracts dust and gums up the lock.
CHECK FOR OPENER INTERFERENCE: This is the most important check. If your opener isn’t working, make 100% sure the manual slide latch or T-handle lock is disengaged before you try again.

If the cylinder still turns and only the guides are gummed up with salt and grime, a cleaning and realignment at $90 to $170 is the better money. Once the housing has corroded through or the lock bar is pitted and bent, a realignment will not hold, and swapping the hardware at $110 to $230 is the honest answer.
Stop forcing the handle first. A hard yank shears the cam or bends the bar and turns a cheap realignment into a hardware swap. If you can reach the inside of the door, work the lock bar back out of its guide by hand while wiggling the handle. If the car is trapped and nothing moves, call us and we will open it without wrecking the door.
A garage door company. A locksmith knows cylinders, but a garage lock ties into the door's lock bars, guides, and side tracks, and lining those up again is garage door work. On older Sunset and Richmond doors the strike plates and guides are often what shifted, not the lock itself. We fix the whole mechanism, not just the keyway.
The handle has disconnected from the lock bars behind it — usually a sheared cam or a set screw that's let go — so the cylinder spins without retracting anything. It's a repair, not a replacement, in most cases. Until it's fixed, the door may be locked with you on the wrong side of it, which is a call we get more than you'd think; we handle those 24/7.
An opener resists casual lifting through its drive, but it isn't a lock, and older openers can be defeated by fishing the release cord through the top of the door. For garages that open onto busy streets, or where the garage connects straight into the house — most of San Francisco's row homes — we recommend a physical slide lock or an opener-integrated deadbolt as a genuine second layer.
Damp-season swelling and corrosion. The lock bars run through guides on the door and strike plates on the track; moisture swells wood-framed openings, and salt air corrodes bar and guide surfaces so tolerances vanish. Realigning the guides and treating the bars usually cures it — $90–$170 — and the fix holds much better than a squirt of lubricant from the street side.
