The Telltale Signs of a Broken Lock

Lock failures can be mechanical (rust, wear) or user-related (jamming). Here are the common symptoms.

Symptoms of a Lock Problem:

This is a common and frustrating problem. The key is stuck in the lock cylinder, or you’ve applied too much force to a stuck lock, and the key has snapped off.
The T-handle on the outside is frozen with rust and will not turn. Or, the manual slide latch on the inside is rusted to its track and cannot be moved.

Frequently Asked Questions

My garage opener hums but won't open. Is it the lock?

It is very likely the problem. Immediately stop using the opener. Go inside and check if your manual T-handle or slide latch is engaged. If it is, disengage it and try again.

Should I use my manual lock if I have an automatic opener?

NO. We strongly recommend you do not use the manual lock. The opener itself is the lock. Engaging the manual lock and then running the opener can destroy your opener or your door panels.

My key broke off in the lock. Can you fix it?

Yes. We have special tools to extract the broken part of the key. We can then either repair or replace the lock cylinder.

What kind of lubricant is safe for locks?

Use a graphite-based powder or a lock-specific spray. Do not use oil-based lubricants like WD-40, which will attract dust and gum up the lock pins.
